How to Measure Your Head for a Riding Helmet
Getting the right helmet fit takes 30 seconds and could save your life.
A helmet that is too loose will not protect you in a fall. A helmet that is too tight will cause headaches and discomfort. Here is how to measure correctly before you buy.
What You Need
- A soft measuring tape
- A mirror
- 30 seconds
Step 1 — Find the widest point Place the measuring tape around your head approximately 2.5cm above your eyebrows and 2.5cm above your ears. This is the widest part of your head and the correct measurement point.
Step 2 — Note the measurement in centimetres Keep the tape snug but not tight. Note the number. This is your head circumference.
Step 3 — Match to your size

Step 4 — When your measurement is between two sizes Always size up. A slightly larger helmet with the internal padding adjusted is safer and more comfortable than one that is too small.
Step 5 — Check the fit after putting it on the helmet should sit level on your head, one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows. It should not rock forward, backward or side to side. The chin strap should be snug — you should be able to fit two fingers between the strap and your chin, no more.
