How Much Does a Dressage Arena Cost to Build in Qatar?

How Much Does a Dressage Arena Cost to Build in Qatar?

QUICK ANSWER

A dressage training arena on a 65m × 35m footprint (2,275m²) with a marked FEI-standard 20m × 60m court needs a compacted limestone base, a geotextile separation layer and 100–125mm of footing: either local washed sand with fibre, or imported Martin Collins footing.

Local sand is cheaper upfront but needs daily watering in Doha's heat. Imported footing costs more and takes 6–10 weeks by sea freight (confirm with the supplier). There is no fixed market price for either, so get formal quotes using the exact quantities in this guide.

What size is a dressage arena, and why 65m × 35m?

The competition court is 20m × 60m (1,200m²) for most FEI and national tests, or 20m × 40m (800m²) for entry levels and training. A private arena needs extra room around the court for letters, a warm-up track and safe turns, so 25m × 65m is a common practical size. Our 65m × 35m plan is more generous: it centres the full 20m × 60m court with space to lunge, warm up and school young horses.

That extra margin means 2,275m² of base and footing to pay for, against 1,200m² for the court itself. Read the next sections to see the cheaper alternatives.

Can I build a smaller dressage arena to save money?

Yes. Two ways to cut cost:

  • 25m × 65m footprint (1,625m²): still holds the full 20m × 60m court with a margin. It needs roughly 29% less base, membrane and footing than 65m × 35m (about 244m³ / 463 tonnes of base, about 1,870m² of membrane, about 163m³ / 252 tonnes of footing sand, scaled from the same depths used below), and a shorter perimeter of 180m.
  • 20m × 40m small arena (800m²): suits entry-level tests, schooling and home training. The trade-off: riders planning to move up usually need a full 20m × 60m arena.

Every quantity and price in this guide is for the 65m × 35m plan, so scale your quotes to the footprint you actually choose.

How is the dressage court marked inside the arena?

Court dimensions are measured inside the fence, and the letters sit on boards just outside it. Standard letter positions for the 20m × 60m court, measured from the A end:

  • Long side 1: K at 6m, V at 18m, E at 30m, S at 42m, H at 54m
  • Long side 2: F at 6m, P at 18m, B at 30m, R at 42m, M at 54m
  • Centre line: D at 6m, L at 18m, X at 30m (centre), I at 42m, G at 54m

A and C are the short-end centre points, 60m apart. The corner letters K, F, H and M sit 6m from the short sides, and X is 10m from each long side. The small 20m × 40m arena uses only A K E H C M B F, with D, X and G on the centre line; E and B sit at 20m and the other letters are 14m apart.

PRO TIP: Fix letter boards just outside the fence line, in high-contrast colour, and stake them firmly; Qatar's shamal winds will knock over anything loose. Leave an opening at A, and leave space behind the short side at C for the judge's position (higher levels can use up to five judges at C, E, B, H and M). Always check final distances against your national federation's current official diagram before installing anything permanent.

What goes under the footing? (the layer stack)

Both footing options sit on the same base. From the ground up:

  • Sub-base: existing compacted native ground, level with only a slight fall (1–2%) for drainage (confirm with a site survey)
  • Base course: compacted crushed limestone, 150mm deep; the load-bearing layer
  • Separation membrane: non-woven geotextile, stops footing and base mixing over time
  • Footing: 100–125mm; this is where the two packages differ

Local sand or imported Martin Collins footing: which should you choose?

Factor Package A: Local sand Package B: Imported (Martin Collins, UK)
Footing Local washed/sieved sand + fibre additive Activ-Track pre-blend, or CLOPF fibre mixed into sand
Best for Budget builds, fast local supply Serious programmes, lower maintenance
Lead time Short 6–10 weeks sea freight (confirm with supplier)
Watering High, daily irrigation Lower (wax/fibre blend holds moisture better)
Upfront cost Lower Higher

QATAR CLIMATE NOTE: Sand-only footing dries and dusts quickly in Doha's summer, so daily irrigation is part of keeping the surface safe. Imported blends need less water, but sea-freight delays can push installation into peak summer. Budget for a perimeter drain: rainfall is low on average, but flash floods do happen and can undermine an undrained arena edge.

What materials and quantities does a 2,275m² arena need?

Based on a 150mm compacted base and 100–125mm footing depth:

  • Base course (crushed limestone): about 341m³ / 648 tonnes (both packages)
  • Geotextile membrane: about 2,616m² including 15% overlap, roughly 6 rolls at 4.5–5m width
  • Package A (local sand): about 227.5m³ / 352.6 tonnes washed sand plus about 6.8 tonnes fibre
  • Package B1 (Activ-Track full pre-blend): about 250m³ / 375 tonnes; confirm actual tonnage with Martin Collins, as density is an estimate
  • Package B2 (CLOPF hybrid): about 227.5m³ / 352.6 tonnes base sand plus about 6.8 tonnes CLOPF fibre

PRO TIP: Give suppliers these exact m³ and tonne figures instead of asking for 'a dressage arena'. You get like-for-like quotes and avoid over-ordering.

What these figures cover
  • All figures are for the 65m × 35m (2,275m²) plan. A 25m × 65m arena needs roughly 29% less material.
  • Base course, geotextile and fencing ranges are indicative estimates, not confirmed local prices.
  • Freight uses a recent real quote of about £2,500 per 40ft container from the UK, converted to QAR at an approximate rate. Middle East freight is currently elevated and moving, so reconfirm before ordering.
  • Footing material itself is 'request quote': it depends on supplier and market.
  • Not included: labour and installation, earthworks beyond the existing graded sub-base, kickboards, perimeter drain, letter boards, judge's position, customs/duty on imported footing, and ongoing maintenance.

Are kickboards and a perimeter drain optional?

The fence around a dressage court is low, usually about 30cm (a foot) high, and is a boundary marker rather than a barrier. Kickboards or low boards around the 20m × 60m court (about 160m) are optional for training-only use but standard for anything approaching competition-level schooling. A perimeter drain around the 200m edge is strongly recommended: flash floods are infrequent but can wash out an unprotected arena edge in a single event.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a smaller arena than 65m × 35m?

Yes. A 25m × 65m footprint still holds the full 20m × 60m court and needs roughly 29% less material. A 20m × 40m small arena suits entry-level tests and home training, but riders planning to move up usually need the full 20m × 60m court.

Do I need imported footing, or is local sand good enough?

Local sand is a workable option, especially for training-only use. The trade-off is daily watering in Qatar's heat. Imported footing costs more upfront and takes longer to arrive, but needs less water.

How long does the build take with imported footing?

Base and membrane work can move quickly once materials are on site. For imported footing, plan for 6–10 weeks of sea freight first (confirm with the supplier) and build that into your schedule.

Why is Package B1 freight so much higher than B2?

B1 imports the entire ~375-tonne footing, roughly 14 × 40ft containers. B2 imports only the ~6.8-tonne fibre, about one container, while the sand stays local. At current freight rates that gap alone is over QAR 150,000.

Is a perimeter drain really needed in a desert climate?

We recommend one. Rain is rare, but flash floods arrive with little warning, and a 200m drain costs far less than repairing a washed-out arena edge.
