The Longhorn Story — British Made Since 1989

Longhorn is the registered brand of Horner Shearing — a family-run business based in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, in the north of England. The Horner family began selling shearing equipment directly to farmers over 35 years ago, building a deep understanding of what professional shearers actually need from their equipment.

In 1989, after years of working with other brands and identifying the gaps in the market, Horner Shearing made a decision that would define the company. They developed their own battery-powered shearing machine — the Longhorn 12 Volt 3.2 — to give farmers in remote areas the ability to shear without depending on mains electricity. The machine was designed to run from a standard vehicle battery, shear hundreds of animals on a single charge, and withstand the toughest working conditions.

It was a quiet revolution. Over 7,000 Longhorn 12 Volt units are now in use in the UK alone — with thousands more operating across Europe, the Middle East, Australia and beyond. Since that first machine, Horner Shearing has continuously expanded the Longhorn range, adding mains-powered machines, cordless battery clippers, handpieces, flexible driveshafts, cutters, combs and accessories — all manufactured to the same exacting British standard.

Today, Longhorn products are sold worldwide by specialist agricultural and equestrian retailers — and every single product continues to be designed and manufactured in Britain.

Why Qatar's Stable Owners Choose Longhorn

Clipping horses in Qatar's climate is a demanding job. Qatar's warm winters mean horses can develop surprisingly thick coats that cause discomfort and impair performance — regular clipping keeps horses cooler, drier after exercise, and more comfortable year-round. The right clippers make the difference between a quick, clean job and hours of frustration.

Longhorn equipment is built specifically for professional, high-frequency use — exactly the demands placed on clippers in Qatar's busy stable yards. Here is why Longhorn stands out:

100% Made in Britain — every Longhorn machine, handpiece, cutter and comb is designed and manufactured in the UK to the highest quality standards

Built for tough conditions — heavy-duty steel casings and precision engineering ensure Longhorn equipment handles even the heaviest coats without overheating or stalling

Minimal heat build-up — the Longhorn handpiece design is specifically praised for its balance and dramatically reduced heat during extended clipping sessions — essential for Qatar's environment

Trusted by professionals — over 7,000 units in the UK alone, plus thousands more in use worldwide across all climates and conditions

Complete system — machines, handpieces, flexible driveshafts, cutters and combs all designed to work together as a single, optimised shearing system

Excellent value — professional-grade performance at a price that delivers outstanding long-term value compared to premium European brands

PRO TIP: In Qatar's climate where horses sweat heavily and daily grooming is essential, investing in a professional-grade clipper like the Longhorn Strike pays for itself quickly in saved time and consistently clean results across multiple horses.

Longhorn Strike Cordless — Freedom to Clip Anywhere

The Longhorn Strike cordless clipping machine is the standout product in the range for Qatar's horse owners — and for very good reason. A cordless clipper eliminates one of the most common frustrations and safety hazards in any clipping session: managing a cable around a moving horse.

200W motor — powerful enough to handle the heaviest winter coats with ease

6.0Ah lithium batteries — two batteries included for extended clipping sessions without interruption

Completely cordless — total freedom of movement around the horse. No cable to trip over, catch on equipment, or spook a nervous animal

Ideal for horse clipping, cattle clipping, dagging and belly clipping

PRO TIP: Always keep a spare set of charged batteries available when clipping multiple horses. The Strike's lithium battery charges quickly — but for a busy clipping day with 4 or more horses, two battery sets ensure you never stop mid-clip.

Longhorn XT Flexi Kit — The Professional Standard

The Longhorn XT Flexi Kit with SureGrip Handpiece is the complete professional shearing outfit — the choice of serious stable managers, professional grooms and agricultural shearers who clip large numbers of animals regularly.

Longhorn XT mains machine — heavy-duty steel casing, 0.5 bhp motor, EasyDrive quick-connect system for fast driveshaft changes

SureGrip handpiece — ergonomically designed for extended use with reduced hand fatigue and outstanding blade control

Flexible driveshaft — allows the heavy motor unit to remain stationary while the lightweight handpiece moves freely around the horse

EasyDrive system — connects the driveshaft quickly and securely with no tools required

One of the most popular professional shearing outfits worldwide — trusted by full-time shearers across the UK and internationally

Longhorn Combs & Cutters — The Right Blade for Every Job

Professional clipping results depend as much on using the right comb and cutter combination as on the machine itself. Longhorn produces a precision range of combs and cutters designed specifically to work with their handpieces.

Standard Comb 76MB — QAR 69

The 76MB Standard Comb is the everyday workhorse of the Longhorn range. With a 76mm cutting width and 5mm bevel, it is ideal for general horse clipping, trace clips, blanket clips, and cattle work. The 76mm width strikes the right balance between cutting coverage and precise control around the horse's legs and head.

Mohair Comb 91SB — QAR 95

The 91SB Mohair Comb is the wider performance option — at 91mm it covers more surface area per stroke, making whole-body clipping significantly faster. With its 3.5mm bevel it delivers a close, fine finish ideal for show preparation and summer clipping. The Mohair Comb is particularly effective on the finer coats common in Arabian horses.

Longhorn Cutter High Carbon Steel & Stealth Cutter — QAR 19 each

Both cutter options are precision-ground for sharp, clean cutting and maximum blade life. The High Carbon Steel Cutter is the reliable everyday choice. The Stealth Cutter offers enhanced performance with a specialist finish that reduces friction and heat during extended clipping — ideal for long sessions in Qatar's warm climate. Always keep spare cutters on hand — a fresh cutter at the start of each clipping session ensures consistently clean results and reduces stress on the horse.

Caring for Your Longhorn Equipment

Proper maintenance keeps your Longhorn clippers performing at their best and extends the life of both machine and blades significantly:

Oil blades before each use and every 10–15 minutes during clipping — blade oil reduces friction, prevents overheating and extends blade life dramatically

Clean hair and debris from the blade and comb after every use — a small brush or compressed air works well

Replace or sharpen cutters regularly — a blunt cutter pulls rather than cuts, causing discomfort to the horse and strain on the motor

Store clippers and blades in a dry location away from dust and moisture — Qatar's humidity can accelerate blade oxidation if equipment is stored wet

Tension the handpiece correctly before each use — correct tension is essential for clean cutting and preventing blade damage

For the Strike cordless — store batteries at approximately 50% charge if not in use for extended periods to maximise battery lifespan

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my horse is drinking enough water in Qatar's summer?

An adult Arabian horse should drink 40 to 60 litres per day at rest in summer, more if working. Check the trough level morning and evening and estimate consumption. A simpler field test: the skin pinch test. Pinch the skin on the neck and release. It should return flat within 1 second. A return time of 2 to 3 seconds indicates mild dehydration. 3+ seconds is moderate to severe — contact a vet. Dark or reduced urine output is also a sign of inadequate water intake.

Should I clip my Arabian horse in Qatar's summer?

Yes — a full clip or chaser clip in April or May significantly helps heat management. Arabians have fine coats naturally, but even a thin summer coat adds insulation. Clipped horses cool down faster after exercise and sweat less at rest. The key requirement after clipping is UV and insect protection — a lightweight fly sheet for turnout prevents sunburn on clipped or light-coloured skin.

Can I still ride my horse in Qatar in July and August?

Yes, but only in the safe exercise windows — before 7:30 AM or after 6:30 PM. Keep sessions shorter than winter equivalent — 30 to 40 minutes maximum at moderate effort. Always cool down fully before stabling. Many Qatar horse owners reduce ridden work significantly in peak summer and focus on hand walking, ground work, and light in-hand exercise during the hottest weeks.

How often should I use electrolytes for my horse in summer?

For horses in regular work during summer, daily electrolyte supplementation is recommended June through September. For horses at rest or in very light work, supplement on days when the horse has sweated visibly or after any travel. Always ensure fresh water is available when giving electrolytes. Reduce to 3 to 4 times per week in October as temperatures drop, and stop entirely from November to March when Qatar weather is mild.

What are the signs that my horse has heatstroke and needs a vet?

Call a vet immediately if you see: rectal temperature above 40.5°C, the horse is not sweating despite heat and distress, the horse is stumbling or uncoordinated, the horse collapses or cannot rise, breathing is extremely laboured (60+ breaths per minute), or the horse is unresponsive to stimulation. While waiting for the vet: move to shade, apply cool (not iced) water continuously, apply ice packs to the neck, groin, and armpits where major blood vessels run close to the surface.
